A few weeks ago, we posted up a trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s latest “thriller,” The Happening, that emphasized the film’s plot that a worldwide suicide epidemic was striking. It started out with a girl stabbing herself in the neck with a needle. That trailer was soon yanked from the web, but I just saw a new trailer before Jumper yesterday.

What was interesting about this new trailer is that it totally played down the whole suicide angle. You wouldn’t even know people were committing suicide in it, except for one random scene of people falling off of a building, but it’s not clear that they’re jumping. I guess the “Hey kids, suicide is fun!” marketing plan was changed in favor for this new one.

While it’s not clear exactly what is “happening,” the trailer plays up the “it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature” aspect of the film. As people are dying, we also get a lot of trees shaking their leaves, which makes the whole thing look kind of funny. Although the embedded trailer below is the same exact one I saw in the theater, who knows if this will continue to be available or if it’ll get yanked, too.

Also, this movie had better include “Teen Suicide (Don’t Do It!)” by Big Fun on the soundtrack.

About the trailer for Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull… I was really irritated when it starts off because I think there’s too much footage from the previous films. I still think they put too much of that stuff in. But, eventually, the trailer pulls it off and gives us the money shots. Most of the scenes from the new film in the trailer seem like they’re just from the movie’s opening, so I’m expecting another trailer down the line with more about the movie’s actual storyline. We still don’t know what the movie’s about from this.

But, I think it looks great! It seems to still have the old fashioned feel of the previous films, but with a modern edge. The stunts are a little over the top — some look like they would just kill ol’ Indy — but that’s ok. There’s a sense of fun and excitement here that’s very nostalgic. I’m excited about the film now when before I was hedging my bets.

The other thing that’s kind of interesting here I want to mention is that I think this is the first time Yahoo! has made a trailer embeddable for other websites. They get a lot of exclusives and trailers first before everybody and haven’t been sharing. I wonder if this is a special deal just for this important film or if Yahoo! is going to implement the embedding ability across the board. I hope they do, so I don’t have to do a “go look at Yahoo! to see the trailer” link anymore.

And lastly — guess what’s missing from this trailer? If you guessed “a crystal skull,” you’d be right.

Hmm, the embedded Pineapple Express trailer embedded below definitely looks like a low-quality bootleg, but as of this writing it hasn’t been taken down by the studio. So, I’m putting it up. I hate when bootlegs get taken down.

This is another “Judd Apatow” comedy. His name’s in quotes because he’s just producing again. One thing I really like about Apatow now — besides putting his name on quality comedies — is how he’s been giving directing jobs to great indie directors. I think a lot of the charm behind Superbad was the direction by Greg Mottola, who hadn’t directed a feature film since The Daytrippers back in 1996. Daytrippers is one funny ass movie and it was a shame that it took over 10 years to get Mottola on a feature again and damn if he didn’t knock Superbad out of the ballpark.

Pineapple Express is directed by David Gordon Green, who has a lot more film credits than Mottola, but he’s mostly directed micro-indies that don’t get much exposure, but get rave reviews, like George Washington, All the Real Girls and Undertow. The red-band trailer, i.e. it shows guys smoking weed — THE HORROR!! — actually only looks ok until the end gag with James Franco’s foot through the windshield. That’s a great bit and is enough to make me want to see this. Seth Rogen stars and co-wrote the script with his best friend Evan Goldberg. Check it before you wreck it:

Woody Harrelson’s two sides are usually nuts and nutzoid. He’s really kinda been out of the public eye lately hasn’t he? Sure, he was in that movie The Walker last December and had that brief bit in No Country for Old Men. And, actually, looking at his IMDB credits list, it appears he’s been working constantly, so how come I feel like he hasn’t been around much? Anyway he’s going to be in two comedies in the next couple of months playing two very different roles.

He’s one of the main characters of The Grand, a mockumentary about a poker tournament. Now, I’m a huge poker TV-watching junkie, so this may look funnier to me than others. In it, Woody plays a total degenerate who’s been married 72 times:

Then, in Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro, I guess he plays some sort of uptight trainer and/or coach. This is a decent scene courtesy of the MTV Movies Blog:

Morgan Spurlock’s follow-up documentary to Super Size Me has the director searching for the world’s most notorious terrorist in Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden? The got some great buzz at the Sundance Film Festival where it debuted last month. No word on when it’s going to hit regular theaters, but I hope it’s sooner than later cuz I really want to see this. Super Size Me was a really fun movie and almost more than that, I loved his TV show 30 Days that ran on F/X for, I think, only two seasons. Spurlock seems to turn some people off in a Michael Moore kind of way, but I think he’s funny. He seems particularly funny in this:

Color me shocked. The Iron Man Super Bowl TV ad (who won by the way) actually shows a bunch of stuff that wasn’t in the earlier trailer. There’s little to go on of what the plot might actually be, but the ad is fulfilling in showing that this film looks pretty dang cool. Like right now, the film could totally suck, but at least now you know it’s going to look great. The all-CGI sequence at the end of the ad is a little videogame-ish, but it looks like it’ll be fun at least a) for the visuals and b) for Robert Downey Jr. You can watch the trailer here:

If you “wanted” to see the trailer for Wanted, the action flick starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy, that airs during the Super Bowl, you can check it out already via the power of YouTube. And who knows if this is legit. I hope it doesn’t get taken down. Not that I’m particularly attached to this movie, I just hate when that happens.

The new trailer doesn’t show much that the old trailer already didn’t, but it still looks stylish and neat. Angelina’s the main draw here, I guess, but I like David O’Hara coming through the plate glass window. I dig that guy and I know he’s going to get his due this year. (I hope.) P.S. I found this via Cinematical.

It’s funny, even though Meet the Spartans was the #1 movie last weekend, there was a fierce backlash against the whole notion of spoof movies, as if this one film was about to bring down the great American empire because people actually paid money to go see it. (Although, I prefer the theory that teenage boys bought tickets for the PG-13 Spartans only to sneak in to go see Rambo.)

Meanwhile (he says in a comic-book flavored transition), there’s another spoof film on the immediate horizon, March’s Superhero Movie. So, after people were screaming bloody murder all day Monday about how awful Spartans sucked, AICN puts up this breathless, adoring “review” of Superhero Movie, as if it’s going to rebuild the empire Spartans brought down. Come on, could the timing be any more suspect?

Now there’s a trailer for the film that looks to be just like a parody of the Spider-Man movies. Judge for yourself. Does this look like an empire saver? (Ironically, I saw this trailer on Empire Online.)
