I’ve already effused about how I’m “dying” to see George Romero’s Diary of the Dead, but I also just found out via GreenCine Daily that underground filmmaker Rusty Nails has been hard at work for the past two years on a documentary about Sir George, called Dead On: The Life and Cinema of George A. Romero.
The doc looks pretty good from the trailer embedded below. I like Nails’ subdued, low-key approach to the material. As George says in an interview in the trailer, “When people meet me, they expect a raving maniac.” Every interview I’ve seen of the man, he’s anything but. So, it’s nice to see the documentary going the same route to match George’s personality. There’s also all kinds of archival material in the trailer: old interviews with George, some behind-the-scenes shots from films like Creepshow. There’s also nice modern interviews with Stephen King and John Waters.
I hope this film is ready around the time of Diary of the Dead’s release (3/7/08), and it would make sense for Nails to promote it concurrently. Looks good:
